Differences between WPC and MDF Panels

Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) and Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) panels are two finishing products that revolutionize the use of modern materials for finishing. Their manufacturing process makes them mimic the look of other conventional materials for a fraction of the cost. If you’re planning to buy either of these products but do not know where to start, consider the following differences to help you decide which one to buy.

1. Material and Manufacturing Process

The greatest difference between MDF and WPC is their material composition and manufacturing process. MDF or medium-density fiberboard is made from wood fibers combined together with resin or adhesives under high temperature and pressure. WPC or wood plastic composite, is a composite material made from wood fibers and thermoplastics to produce a strong and durable material. The resulting mixture is then formed under a coextrusion process to shape them into its designed profile and thickness.

2. Installation

The installation process between MDFs and WPCs are almost identical, except that WPCs can be installed in a lot more different ways.  MDFs are installed using a recommended wood adhesive to adhere to any surface. The panels are then applied with pressure to secure it firmly, and ensure that the panel sticks to the surface. On the other hand, WPC uses accessories at the back of the panel, where the screw can be held, to simultaneously secure the panel and hide the screws for a more seamless installation. Depending on the surface where the panel will be installed, WPC can also be installed with an adhesive. Both installations are fast and easy, and can even be installed with basic knowledge of the material.

3. Uses

Both materials can be used in ceilings, walls, and floors. In terms of flexibility, MDFs are more versatile for bended applications unlike WPC. Beneath the panel is a layer of soft plywood to still ensure its rigidity. The top is made of wood fibers to add texture and flexibility. Both materials have profiles for indoor and outdoor use, are available in various shapes and textures, and offer a selection of swatches.

4. Maintenance

Both materials are as easy to maintain as it is easy to use and install. Avoid using harsh chemicals and cleaning agents to clean the panels. Use a clean cloth to wipe away the accumulated dirt and grimes on its surface, and remember not to burden the panel with a heavy object to avoid accidental breakage.

5. Cost

The cost of the panels is dependent on where it is manufactured, its thickness, size, and its profile, but usually, WPC is a little pricier than MDFs. To know your options, find a local supplier that has a variety of options to choose from. This will help you decide what material to use for your project.

Both WPC and MDF have their own strengths and disadvantages.Decocity offers interior and exterior finishing materials of different composition, like high pressure laminate (HPL), WPC wall panel, PVC ceiling sheet, and SPC flooring. Soon, MDFs will also be part Decocity’s growing product portfolio.
