Slide to paint the MDF Panel!

Medium Density Fiberboard, also called MDF Panel, is great for custom made furniture and applications because of its flexibility, versatility, and consistency, characterized with a smooth surface that does not possess knots, loops, and grains like hard wood does. Because it is a lightweight material, it is easy to install and does not require excessive maintenance. MDF sheet is reused from wood fibers that are usually found discarded on wood works so it is sustainable too. While homeowners and even interior designers prefer using materials that can be bent, they also want a material that’s easy to design, especially if there is a design style they want to explore, or specific color scheme to follow.  Using MDF entails details and textures on surfaces, but others wonder, can it be painted to my desired color?

Can you paint Flexible MDF Panels?

Unlike other finishing materials, MDF possesses a quality that other materials do not— customizable. So yes, you CAN paint Lamerra’s MDF Panels. It has a smooth and consistent surface feasible for painting. But before you proceed with your project, you have to follow the rules when it comes to painting them to prevent you from making a beginner mistake that you cannot undo. Read them below:

1. Paint the MDF Panel after installation.

Paint the MDF Panel only after being installed to its final position to acclimatize the material to its application and to avoid cracking, which may ruin the overall appearance of the material. In installing the material, especially in bended applications, make sure to follow the recommended bending diameter per profile to keep the material in its pristine condition for a long time.

    2. Light sanding the material is recommended.

MDF Panels are pre-sanded to remove imperfections from its surfaces, but light sanding by hand is still recommended to improve paint adhesion. Use a regular fine sandpaper and soft-back sanding sponges to smoothen its surface and ensure that the excess dust and dirt is removed afterwards using either a vacuum or a brush with soft bristles.

      3. Use Acrylic Based Paints.

Acrylic based paints work best with MDF because it keeps the material from absorbing too much moisture. It dries quicker. and shows a smoother finish. Apply the acrylic as normal, with a brush or a roller, allowing each coat to dry before applying another layer. Remember to look for a paint brand that does not compromise your health for long term use in your interior! For best results, follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions and manuals.

MDF Panels can indeed hold out on its own natural look as a material, but you can always find creative ways for it to be more suitable to your application!
