The Key to Long Lasting MDF Panels

Believe it or not, caring for your panels properly is the key to making it last, and it’s easy to do as much as it is to say it. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a great material for several applications because they are versatile in terms of design and structure. It is also easy to use, customizable, and lightweight, for easier installation. The cherry on top is its sustainable properties, because these are created from wood fibers and resins. Although it is a compound material, MDF Panels have similar properties as wood, which makes it susceptible to material disintegration caused by pests  and moisture. Right precautions can help your MDF Panels last longer. From storage, to installation, to cleaning and maintenance, knowing how to care for MDFs ensures the material’s beauty and performance.

Care for your Panels

  1. During storage, do not place the panels directly onto the floor, where it can be in contact with water. Place them atop pallets where the air can freely move, allowing the panels to breathe.
  2. Allow the material to acclimate to the same environmental conditions as its installation site for at least 48 hours to reach equilibrium moisture content and avoid stresses that could cause cracks.
  3. Avoid placing heavy objects directly on the MDF panels, because these  may cause the material to crack or warp over time.  Exercise caution when moving furniture or objects near MDF panels, as the material is soft and can be easily scratched or dented.
  4. Be wary of placing MDF Panels in high temperature areas because these can easily damage its material composition. Direct exposure to sunlight can also eventually cause it to lose its color.
  5. Do not install in places where it can be submerged by water, or constantly moisturized as these may cause swelling specially if the panel is not treated with a water-resistant finish.

Cleaning your Panels

  1. Light dusting the MDFs with a soft cloth or feather duster is enough to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on its surface.  Do not use harsh chemicals that can further damage the material either by discoloration or material disintegration.
  2. A mild cleaning solution using common household ingredients can be used for dirt and grimes on its surface. Avoid excessive water damping the surface and quickly wipe the area to prevent moisture absorption.
  3. If signs of wear appear on the surface, lightly sand the area and reapply a finishing coat to restore the panel’s appearance.
  4. For small holes or dents, apply wood filler, let it dry, and sand until smooth before refinishing.
  5. Regularly inspect the panels for any signs of moisture damage. This will help you address the issues promptly, preventing further damage.
