Modern finishing materials are now more complex and sustainable than they were N years ago, and the supply of alternative materials offer design and durability beyond the usual means. An example of this material is Modified Clay Material, more popularly known as MCM. MCM is a combination of raw materials like soil, stone powder, and natural clay, together with additives like polymers and other substances. Unlike other finishing materials like HPL sheets or MDF Panels that bond using high pressure and temperature, MCM uses a low-temperature manufacturing process which makes it unique and more sustainable. The mixture is then fed to a molder that allows it to mimic different textures like tiles, bricks, or weave.
Advantages
MCM has numerous advantages for various applications. It is sustainable and durable and has moisture regulation that improves indoor air quality, occupants’ comfort, and energy consumption. The fast ability of the material to easily absorb or desorb humidity also prevents the growth of airborne bacteria in the room, so it can be used even in places where health and safety is critical. Moreover, the material is made without harmful chemicals, making it safer for human use.
MCM has a fire safety rating of A2-s1,d0 under the Euroclass system, which classifies the material into a material with lower combustibility (A2 – Limited Combustibility), producing little to no smoke (s1 – Smoke Production), and no flaming droplets of particles (d0 – Flaming Droplets). In easier terms, it means that MCM has high fire performance thus increasing its suitability for various residential and commercial applications, including wall cladding or surface covering.
With various colors and textures, MCM can elevate the aesthetic of any surface. The colors mimic the natural environment, giving warmth and balance to any project. With MCM, you can now use natural resources like wood, leather, stones, and clay more sustainably and responsibly.
Disadvantages
MCM may not be your best choice if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, as it has a higher upfront cost compared to other alternatives. It also requires professional installation to ensure a precise and long-lasting application. Color differences can also occur, so it is recommended to order the required number by batches to guarantee uniformity and consistency.
